Summary

The program offers grants of up to $5,000 to support professional development projects led by public school educators and education support professionals. Grants are available nationwide to teachers, counselors, library media specialists, bus drivers, and other school staff who are active members of the National Education Association.

Funds may be used for individual learning experiences such as attending summer institutes, conferences, seminars, or study abroad programs, or for group-led efforts like lesson study, mentoring teams, and collaborative action research. Grant money can cover travel costs, conference registration, materials, and substitute teacher fees in the case of group projects. Funds cannot be used for salaries, indirect costs, grant administration fees, or religious and political activities.

Applications are accepted multiple times per year, with deadlines typically in early February, June, and October. Awards are reviewed in cycles, with notifications following each submission period. Recipients must use the entire grant within 12 months of the award and submit a report on activities and outcomes upon completion. Educators cannot hold more than one active grant at a time but may apply for future rounds after completing previous projects.

These grants benefit both individuals and teams, helping them bring fresh insights, resources, and strategies into the classroom. The program supports projects that enhance student learning through critical thinking, problem-solving, project-based learning, cultural understanding, and deeper engagement with academic content.

To be eligible, applicants must be NEA members and educators working in public schools or public higher education institutions. Those currently holding another active grant from this source are not eligible to apply until their current work is completed and reported. This funding is designed to elevate instructional practices, foster professional growth, and directly impact student achievement across the U.S.
